A discipline of its own
In 2003, sister company Vialis with consortium partners Thales and Accenture won the contract for the rollout of the electronic successor of the “Strippenkaart” public transport pass: the OV-chipkaart (smartcard for public transport). In the kick-off for the project, Vialis was responsible for the installation, management and maintenance of the ticket machines, access ports, add value machines and vending points. It soon became clear though that the technology belonged in a separate company. IT infrastructure, software and applications are a discipline of their own and need a 24-hour management & monitoring environment.
Extra convenience
Even more important is the fact that at an early stage it became apparent that this card can be provided with more functionalities, thus offering the consumer extra convenience. Think, for example, about small payments at the station: buying a quick cup of coffee or croissant. But parking, taxi and building and event access combinations can also make everyday life a little easier.
That is all possible with the RFID technology worked into the OV-chipkaart. In the near future we will come across this and similar technologies more and more in media like cards and telephones, but also wristwatches for example. Mcom supports all media. In our vision, the medium is merely a means to offer more service and comfort.
